Business Continuity Strategy
When organizations first sets out to establish a business continuity program, it is critical to establish a high level plan of action towards an end state vision. This is also important during the developmental stages of a program when it has not yet reached a state of maturity; when it has been tested and proven to be highly effective.
Business Continuity Planning
To ensure the survivability of an organization after critical parts of the business operation experience a disaster, a process (commonly referred to as a plan) needs to be in place. This process is prepared proactively allowing time during normal conditions for members of the management team and critical employees to review and provide input, to ensure all aspects of the business and its operations are factored in. Allowing the organization to consider and assess the value of assets and their priority for protection and recovery. It also helps organizations consider the length of time it can manage without normal business processes before it negatively affects the business, impacts revenue, and other critical issues.
Disaster Plan Testing
The most effective way to know if your Business Continuity Process will work during a disaster is to periodically test it. Performing a live test is the only way to learn what works and what doesn't. Upon completing a test, effective organizations also take the time to perform a post test review involving all of the stakeholders. The output from post test review will yield a report that helps to guide the organization through process and technology improvements, to ensure that when a disaster occurs; the organization is prepared to withstand the impact with minimal disruption to the business and its customers.
